For three days, I’ve been trying to figure this one out. As a parent who has raised two boys that are now adults, and an eight-year-old girl, it boggles the mind that some people who call themselves parents can be capable of taking total leave of their senses, (if they had senses to begin with!) and doing things like this. Not only doing these things, but then being idiotic enough to post it on Facebook!
This started last week, when 21-year-old Chicago, IL resident Andre Curry was arrested after allegedly posting a picture of his 22-month-old daughter, with her wrists, ankles and mouth duct-taped, on Facebook with the picture description: “This is wut [sic] happens wen [sic] my baby hits me back.” Mr. Curry was subsequently charged with aggravated domestic battery.(1)
Now another case has cropped up, this one in Williams, AZ where Frankie and Kayla Almuina, 20 and 19 respectively, have been arrested for the same thing; binding their two children, a two-year-old and a ten-month-old infant with duct tape around the wrists, ankles and mouths, with one of them being hung upside-down from exercise equipment, and like Curry in Chicago, posting pictures of this on Facebook.(2)
(SOAPBOX=ON) Like I said before, this is mind-boggling. Not only that, it’s very disturbing that these kinds of people are not only being allowed to breed, but that they’re dumb enough to post the abuse on a massive social networking website such as Facebook, where they must know that someone is going to turn them in to the police! My fine young readers, our children are gifts that we have been given, entrusted with their care, health and well-being. For anyone to even conceive of doing this kind of thing to a child…is simply pure evil.
Something else I find most curious about this whole issue, is that we have two instances of this within a week’s time. Unless we send a strong message to other would-be abusers that we are out here watching, and that this kind of thing will not be tolerated, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of this.
Having raised three children, I know that parenting can be a challenge. There are times when one gets so exasperated, so stressed out that things like hog-tieing your kids for a while start to seem less unacceptable. Stop. That’s the time when you need to back off, take a breath or two and reapproach the situation calmly. If that doesn’t work, try establishing a support network that you can reach out to, friends or relatives that can come and help you manage the situation for a bit. Raising kids can be frustrating at times, but don’t take that frustration out on those little minds that cannot possibly understand.
I know that this kind of news article is a rather depressing and sour note to end the year on here at The Cybersattva weblog, but these things need to be said. They need to be brought to the fore, exposed for the evil and meanness that they are, and learned from. If even one young adult reading this blog can take something positive away from this, then it is all worth it. Please join me in 2012 safely, sensibly and rationally. Let’s all keep our heads about us, shall we?
